Since I have graduated from Leeds I had the opportunity to visit couple of times. Leeds is very much a student city and caters to everyone’s needs. Different cuisines, vibrant city center, fantastic shopping (one of the best actually) and ongoing entertainment. To add to it, you can easily travel around the UK and explore the country. Edinburgh and London are approximately 3 hours away, Liverpool is 2 hours and Manchester is only 1 hour. No wonder why a lot of students in this region want to go there.
There is an airport in Leeds (you can fly to 75 destinations from there), but the closest international airport is Manchester Airport. I only travelled via Manchester airport once and it was after coming back to Bahrain and it was very convenient; you can check and book your train tickets online for from Manchester Airport to Leeds. If traveling through Heathrow, you may choose to use the train (approx. 3 and a half hours), bus (7 hours) or plane (approx. 1 hour and 10 minutes) – I must say I have travelled on the bus couple of times!
There are 3 universities in Leeds, the reason why it is a very vibrant city. University of Leeds has 33,221 students from 151 countries (5,697 international students); whereas Leeds Beckett University (formally Leeds Metropolitan University) has more than 28,000 students from almost 100 countries. Leeds Trinity University, which was granted full university status in December 2012, has around 3,500 students.
Leeds University is a single campus and around 10-minute walk from Leeds city centre and is a member of the Russell Group. It has also been named as the University of the Year in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017.
In terms of living expenses, Leeds, compared to other cities in the UK, might be considered slightly on the higher end according to Natwest’s Student Living Expenses Index 2016:
- Average expenditure divided by average income: Leeds 70 (average 0.67)
- Household bills – weekly expenditure: Leeds: £10.94 (average is £9.65)
- Going out – weekly expenditure: Leeds £6.73 (Average is £6.65)
- Rent (weekly rent): Leeds £105.37 (Average: £109.00)
